Bollywood is one of the most powerful industries. In 2003 a Bollywood romantic drama made an entire generation of young men part their hair from the middle. Three-second dialogues of three hour long movies remain in the Indian vernacular for as long as three decades. This the power of the Indian cinema or any cinema for that matter to influence people, right to their roots, give them stories they can relate too and fancy. Good cinema has the power to give hope to the people irrespective of where they are in life. It can also set trends that the color the culture permanently, this kind of movies are called trend-setting movies, or rather art pieces that moves something permanent in the mass’ psyche.

Don is an Indian crime thriller. Directed by Mr. Chandra Barot it is one of its kind path-breaking action film. Written by Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar this film stars Amitabh Bachchan, Zeenat Aman, Helen, Pran and other notable Indian actors. This movie surpassed the otherwise traditional action films that showcased only pointless fighting scenes. Don had a very strong story plot and that along with the macho personality of Amitabh Bachchan made this movie to the highest grossing Indian film of 1978. Catch-phrases like “Don ko pakadna mushkil hi nahi naa mumkin hai” is still evergreen and its sequels have had very little to contribute to it.

2. Pakeezah

Pakeeza is set up in a Mughlai theme screened in the year 1971 his movie was directed by Kamal Amrohi. Pakeeza according to Bollywood critics is one of the most poetic, fantastic and nostalgia-inducing film made on an epic scale. The reason could be that Pakeeza was made if not crafted by Mr. Kamal Amrohi who was an Urdu and Hindi writer and a poet.  People have held this film in their hearts, and visceral reason to that is Kamal Amrohi had dedicated this movie to the love of his life and actresses of the film Pakeezah.

3. Mother India

Mother India has not just been a film’s name since 1957, the year Mother India was released. Mother India has rather been a term of respect and endearment in the Indian Vernacular. Directed by, Mehboob Khan this epic movie starring Nargis and Sunil Dutt became the highest grossing film at that time. The films capturing of raw emotions and portrayal of motherhood made it one of the most memorable movies of all time.  Mother India was India’s first submission for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1958, where it lost the award by just one vote. The film won the All India Certificate of Merit for Best Feature Film, the Filmfare Best Film Award for 1957, also Nargis and Mehboob Khan won the Best Actress and Best Director awards respectively.

4. Deewar

If you have heard this dialogue “Mein Aaj bhi pehke hue paise nahi uthata” or this “Bees saal pehle meri maa ne is building ki eetein uthayi thi, aaj yeh building mein apni maa ko tohfe mein dene jaa raha hoon” then you just witnessed the living legacy of Deewar. Deewaar is a 1975 film directed by Yash Chopra and starring Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor. This magnificent movie branded Amitabh Bachchan as an angry young man. His dashing style and aura made a very intense effect on the youth of India.

5. Hum Aapke Hai Kon

This movie brought about a push to the term “blockbuster” in the film industry so to speak. Produced in 1994 this musical romcom was. An avant-garde Sooraj Barjatya directed film starring Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit and many, many other notable characters. Hum Aapke Hai Koun brought about a very family-esque culture to the Bollywood cinema. After this movies a lot of movies were made with a large closely-knit family, showcasing the beauty and zest of the ordinariness of people’s lives. It also started Bollywood’s “big-fat-wedding-film” trend.
